My result from Cut & Paste 2009 Tokyo was........

3rd Place.... (Semi-Finalists)....!

Hmm. I hope I could win and get ticket for the world wide final round in N.Y., but I couldn't. I think I should have prepared bit more than I did... However, It was really awesome event as usual, so I'm proud to be one of the contestant team members, and now I feel like really happy, and really sad at the same time. There were so much troubles today, such as my fire lighter didn't work during the 15min competition, I fall over and actually it was unplugging my keyboard... wrong short cut keys on Japanese keyboard and so on... haha, It was must be fun to watch me!

The happiest thing was about friends. Many of my friends came from both Nagoya and Tokyo to support me, I could even meet my cool high school mates there. Other competitors are really cool too. I was happy about that I could get connection with them and able to share priceless moment with them. Hopefully we can keep in touch and able to do something cool stuff together in the future. Maybe "Copy & Paste" or "Paste & Delete". Well,... maybe not. haha

We didn't have much chance to talk to judges, but happy to be judged and got a little complement about work. I hope I can work with them someday in the future, and maybe talk about this fun night.

And one more thing, I have to thank many of my friends for giving me critique and help me tonight's my design idea. Otherwise I wasn't able to win first round, I think. Actually everything seems like dream now, somehow I feel like I'm gonna cry, it's not sad feeling though...

Probably Tokyo competition works ans event photos will upload within few days, check it out from link below then. (I hope it includes cool photo of myself!) [Cut&Paste], [Cut&Paste - Tokyo 2D Contestants]

Zee Avi

I found this 23-year-old, Malaysian female singer-song writer, Zee Avi today, when I was checking Blender Magazine website. It seems like her first album was out just a week ago, so maybe she isn't popular, however I really liked her jazzy-relax kind of sound. I especially liked "Bitter Heart" and "Honey Bee". So I'm gonna listen her songs tonight while working on my design projects. Hope not get too relax and falling sleep...zzz haha

Graffiti on Palestinan Wall.

--------------------

Today's post is article from Time Magazine, about wall graffiti in Palestine. There are more than 6 m high wall between Palestine and Israel, which will be 640km long, zigzagging deep into Palestinian. In 2002, Israel started building the barrier to prevent suicide bombers. So this is unpleasant heritage for people living in both side of walls, but not so too sad for graffiti artists. This is the hugest canvas they've ever seen. Now 3 graffiti artists helped by Dutch activists, started new project, "Send a Message". People can immortalize their words on the wall, for $40. Just send your massage via Internet, and then these artists stencil them on the wall, and they send us 3 digital photograph images. They've already done 850 massages, and they are now 2.6km long, Including political, romantic, and quirky ones.

I hope you can understand what I wanted to say, from my bad "Engrish" grammar. haha. I thought it is really interesting and I was excited about this project. Even though it is happening another side of the globe, we can participate them. And I like idea of "painting on the wall. So then ordinary Palestinians might read my message. I would like to send something special message as a one Japanese person.

here is the video of the artists at work [Time.com]

Original Typefaces

Currently I'm working on Typography. Basically I explore anything about shape, and creating my original typefaces. Those images are some results from experiment on geometrical shapes. This research and experiment work need steady efforts and takes quite long time, but it's really fun when I could create unexpected cool shape or typeface. I hope I can make very original graphical visual, in the next step.

Cool Ad

「FISH: NOW WITH CHILI.」 。。

I found this ad from the Internet, and i love it! haha
Easy to understand, and makes me lough. Love this cliché situation.Even though copy itself is simple, visual is so attractive with it. I hope someday I can create ads which is fun and mischief. Well, maybe now is the time to find a job for this dream...

Soy tu Aire

[Soy tu Aire]

This is a beautiful interactive website that I found today. I think it's a really innovative one. I guess this artist was conscious about Japanese calligraphy, called Shuji, however, I think he reached his original way of expression in the end. It is simply fun, and recording system is also good idea. Wouldn't be a great way to promote new songs? Maybe It will happen. This site is bit heavy, so it might take time to read the program, but please go to the link and check this beautiful website.

Favorite Singers

Regina Spektor

Imogen Heap

特に好きな曲は「Just For Now」と「Hide & Seek」。

Imogen Heap - [official web] [MySpace Music]

Sometimes my favorite design taste matches with my friend's, but not favorite musics. I don't know why, but maybe because of my unusual experiences. Back in junior high school, I was listening J-pop, after that, I started break-dancing so my life was full of Break-beats, Hip-Hop and R&Bs. And now, since mainly I'm creating using my computer I prefer relax sounds such as café music or piano-based electronica ones. So I usually don't talk about music with my friends, but today I recommend two of my favorite singers. Because I just fel like that.

First singer is Regina Spektor, she is a cute Russian singer-songwriter, active in the U.S. now. I'm pretty bad at describing music, but I think her sounds are really cute, and sweet, and makes me relax, but also edgy for some points. "Fidelity" is her most popular song and I love it. My friend told me this song when I was staying at Hostel in the U.S., so thank you Marge! You can listen from her MySpace Music page.
Second singer is Imogen Heap, she is a British singer-songwriter, used to be a member of "Frou Frou" which is also well-known group, I guess. Her sound usually made with electronic instruments, and her voice is just amazingly magnificent. Which makes me really calm and clear. I usually don't like electronic sounds, but Imogen Heap's is like different dimension, and I love it. It matches really well with her splendor voice. My favorite songs are "Just For Now" and "Hide & Seek". When I had hard time and feeling bad, this song "Just For Now" with a cup of coffee can heals my mind. If you like, you can listen some songs from her MySpace Music page.

Below is the Imogen Heap live video, I found on You Tube. The sound itself is a bit different compare to the CD, however it is amazing to see how she creating beats on the stage. I hope they will have concert in Japan!

The Nation of Characterholic

Especially after I came back from the U.S., I think Japan has so much strange characters around the daily life. I like them, because it's fun to see it, but at the same time, really curious about low-quality characters and it's designers. What's wrong with them!? Haha. Tarepanda
used to be a big movement here in Japan, however I think it never happened in other countries. But I recently like Mameshiba, so I think I can't really complain about Characterholic Japan. Images are funny characters which I found. Enjoy.

Rough Animation of "bean" character,
Mameshiba it tells you small trivias. Check out videos, if you can understand Japanese.

People say "creepy-cute" for this baseball mascot character Doara.

Bunny character on the juice package. Is that strange shape mouth or mustache?

I found them at the rest area of highway, they are hot-dog like characters... They even have names. From left "Imocchi", "American-dokkun"(kunrefers to "Mr."), "Frankun"... very funny.

Character from cotton candy package. I thought it's funny and, somehow I bought it. haha

And this is the last one for today, "Fuji-chan".(Chan is a cute way to tell name for girls in Japan) This is based on Mt. Fuji. Making character from mountain is such a great idea, isn't it? Maybe only Japanese people think so. Well, I thinks it's kinda cute though. haha

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

[WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (official website)]

One of the most famous picture book, created by Maurice Sendak, "Where the Wild Things Are" is made into a movie, and open to the public in Fall 2009. I got this book about two years ago as a birthday gift, and since then it's one of my favorite picture book, so I'm really interested in this news. (Thank you for your cool gift, Tsubasa!) And the directer is well-known music video hit-maker, Spike Jonze who had created videos for Björk, Chemical Brothers, and other big name artists. When well-sold novels or other books made into a movie, I usually can't like them more than original pieces, however, this time trailer has the atmosphere that I wanted to have in the movie, so I'm really excited to see it on the big screen! I hope I will have a girlfriend before then. haha

Making and Breaking

Today was really hot day, so even though I did just few things, I'm exhausted. Maybe I should sleep soon. I hate Japanese high humidity season...
Today's artwork is face tracing, I was trying to figure out my thesis theme "shape", using curvy human face parts, however it end up just tracing face... Well, I enjoyed process, so maybe it's ok. I hope people is not gonna say it's a copy of enlightenment works. (which is kinda popular creative group in Japan, who does similar style) What I realized today is, that after breaking my finished work is much better than my finished work. (I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.) I think it's because I can expect how this tracing piece would be like, in the middle of work, but if I break that, it means adding "unexpected essence" into my piece. Maybe that's why I like it much better. How do you think?

Recently I found this retro ads at Osu, Nagoya, Japan. It makes me lough, but at the same time, I think it's pretty cool. Actually top one is advertising the chocolate, and bottom one is the insecticide. For me, these visual doesn't make sense at all, but these ads atmosphere make it's ok. haha. (However, nowadays I don't think these ideas can be approved by Art Directors...) I hope I could live old days when all ads were look like these. Maybe warm atmosphere.

Prime Numbers

[Visual Complexity]

Today was headache day, I donno why. I slept so much last night, but I had headache entire day, so I didn't go out anywhere, I even missed my friend's band, Belles & Whistles live... Sorry Emily. Today's my work is kind of diagram, I selected "prime numbers" as my theme. First, I typed numbers according to the decimal system grid. Second, I selected only prime numbers, and connect each of them using lines. (I used different colors for each numbers.) The shape itself isn't as interesting as I expected, however visual looks fine, I think. Second image is a same graphic, but selected only numbers 13 and 67 version. please check bigger size too by clicking images.
There is a really cool diagram website called "
Visual Complexity", it is doing similar things but much more complicated ones. You better check it out even though you are not designer. I'm not sure what is the goal for this type of exploration, however I guess trying is only way to figure it out. Last image is just a triangle graphic. Recently, I've been doodling heaps of triangles, and this time I tried to use Illustrator and created a graphic. Text doesn't much with image, but I feel some kind of power from triangle shape, so I put it beside the visual.

Well well well, currently I don't have any money, so I hope tomorrow, I can find cool part time job... ;0

Random Patterns

[AUTOMATA]
[Wikipedia English - Grapher]

Recently I'm exploring one of the iPhone's maniac, nerdy application "Automata". I actually can't figure out what is it all about, however, this is a software which we can create random patterns with triangle and rectangle shapes, by just typing numbers from 0 to 255. So this time I created some random pattern graphics using that software and also Photoshop. I think it's good for iPhone users who love design, and nice thing is it's free. My current creative theme is "Geometrical shape and Typography" so I'm interested in shape, that is formed according to the numbers, which including diagrams and graphs. I'm also interested in software calls Grapher, that is attached to Mac OS X, however it's too tough to use. Can someone teach me differential calculus? I have seriously NO IDEA...

This is good. Especially transition techniques are sick. Awesome! I've been looking for this video since my CCA professor showed me in the class, and now, finally found it! I'm so happy ;P I haven't seen this movie yet, but I will, soon as possible. I hope I can make cool motion graphics, that touches people's heart like this.

Cut & Paste 2009, Tokyo

Cut&Paste Digital Design Tournament 2007 from Cut&Paste on Vimeo.

Fortunately, I got through the preliminary of Cut&Paste, worldwide design competition in Tokyo, so I'm going there again and join the Final competition!! This is my favorite kind of event, so I'm really excited right now ;P But also getting nervous... If you have chance to come to Tokyo on Saturday, 30th of May, you should join us and come to check this out! And because of this event, I created my profile page at Pantone®'s project, myColor myIdea, they are world wide sponsor of this event. This isn't too exciting website, but fun to brouse other creative people's favorite colors and source of their inspirations. And I also embeded new C&P video from Vimeo, this one is also pretty cool. By the way, I just created Vimeo account, so if you are also Vimeo user, add me as your contact and let me know cool vids there!

Broken Camera Photography

Recently, my camera damaged and now I can't use zoom. It is actually really weird, because if I zoom in, color would change to intense high-contrast and come out bright RGB color. Probably my CCD is damaged... so, it has been annoying for me, but I found out even that could be cool effect when I do long exposure techniques. (In those photo, I'm zooming in and out, also shaking my camera during the exposure.) Then I can get some strangely cool effect without using Photoshop. It's kind of risky to do, however if you are Photographer and struggling to take nice image, maybe breaking your camera is one way to solve the problem!! ...maybe not! haha
